The Vimy Flies Again!

1:16pm PDT September 30, 2004

Ready...
Set...
Go!

After many many months of Herculean effort by John LaNoue, Peter McMillan, Mark Rebholz, Erik Durfey, Sabastien Arsenault (from Montreal) and many others “The Vimy”, under the capable and expert hands of Mark and John, roared aloft at 1:16 pm Thursday, September 30, 2004 on its maiden flight with its two new Canadian Orenda OE 600 engines.

Ironically, as Peter McMillan recalled, on this date 10 years ago our beloved Vimy was flying over the Taj Mahal in India on its way to Australia.

Onward and upward to our planned Spring 2005 re-creation of Alcock and Brown’s historic transatlantic flight that demonstrated the commercial feasibility of “Air Travel “ (for which they won a £10,000 British pound prize.)

How inspiring that out transatlantic re-creation is occurring in the context of “spaceshipone’s” current demonstration of the commercial feasibility of “Space Travel”– for a $10,000,000 US dollar prize put up by the “X Prize Foundation.” Spaceshipone’s development costs were paid by that ardent supporter of aircraft history and Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen. The stalwart champion of British energy and resourcefulness, Richard Branson founder of Virgin Airlines – “Atlantic”, “Australian”, “American” and soon “Galactic”, is purchasing a fleet of spaceshipones for “Virgin Galactic. “

All this a mere 85 years after the history making Vimy flight of Alcock and Brown – who would ever have guessed it all in 1919!
