The Vimy to be Heard in Star Wars by Mark Rebholz Recently the Vimy replica was used for a very interesting mission. It seems that some time ago an executive from Lucas Films, the producer of the Star Wars series of feature films, heard the Vimy as it flew over the San Francisco Bay area. The unusual sound of the high revs of the BMW engines along with the slow turning MT props, combined with the wind passing through the 117 flying wires, make a sound that isn’t heard every day. Sound engineers arranged for a day of flying near the Vimy home base airport. Many passes were made for the highly sensitive sound equipment as engineers recorded the one-of-kind sounds that few people are lucky enough to hear. A remote listening post with microphones and recording equipment was set up in an open field, and the Vimy crew of Shawn Mulligan and Mark Rebholz circled the site at low altitude using different power settings to record all combinations of the unique noises. As the sound recordings were being made a Lucas Films documentary film crew recorded everything, from the ground and in the air, as the sound recordings were being made. Vimy enthusiasts will be able to see the Vimy fly in the upcoming documentary film about how the Star Wars episode was produced. The sound recordings will be used as the sound of a space ship in the new release of the Star Wars film, coming this spring.
