Still Working

by Mark Rebholz

20-October-00

As of today we still don't have a commitment from a gear manufacturer to build the gears we need. It seems that the engineers all want to do it but other departments in the various companies are reluctant to take on such a small project. Once the work begins the Vimy will be able to fly a month or after. In the meantime John LaNoue is working on other components of the Vimy and conducting routine maintenance.

I have had many requests lately from model builders about plans for the Vimy. I am sure that we have the drawings somewhere, but I am not sure where they are. John probably has them in his hangar, but we still don't have the resources or the time to make drawings available. The best thing to do would be to purchase the 1/72 scale model kit that Jenny Moseley has had for sale from her stock of goods in England. I will contact her and see how many kits are available. A good model maker should be able to take the drawings from that kit and scale them up to make a flying radio control model of the Vimy. If the model flies anything like the real thing it might be a handful....neutral stability is not very desirable in a flying model.

I have also had many requests for past magazine articles and books. I don't have a stock of these items, but I can tell you how to get them: The book "The Greatest Flight" by Peter McMillan, and the National Geographic video of the same title might still be available through amazon.com. "The Greatest Flight" book and video are about the 1994 re-enactment of the England-Australia flight. The May 1995 (Australia) and the May 2000 (Africa) National Geographic magazines are available by calling 1-888-CALL-NGS.
