Vimy Painting on First Day Cover

30-June-01

Artist André Du Plessis was commissioned by the SAAF Museum in South Africa to paint the Silver Queen arriving in South Africa in 1999. The painting, shown here, will appear on First Day Covers to be released on September 15, 2001 at the Silver Queen Air Rally.

The painting depicts the arrival of the Silver Queen, piloted by Mark Rebholz and John LaNoue. The aircraft accompanying the Vimy is Spottie,an Atlas Aircraft Cheetah C, which is a Mirage III upgraded. Spottie was painted in "Cheetah" livery to commemorate the SAAF's 75th anniversary.

André was kind enough to send us a digital image of his work. You can visit his Web site here.
