Photos of Vimy's Propellersby Kevin McCarty, a site visitor from Australia June 11, 2000 This photo shows three of the manufacturing people with James Bennett, who was the flight engineer on the England to Australia flight in 1919. The caption reads: "G. Page, C. Boyd, F. Hazlewood (Patternmakers), J. Miller (Pattern Foreman), Sgt. James Bennett. Propellor manufactured in Pattern shop, Ipswich Railway Workshops early in 1920, for Vickers Vimy plane used by Sir Ross and Site Keith Smith, on the first flight from England to Australia, 1919." (Webmaster Note: Obviously, there is an error
in this caption; how could the propeller be manufactured
in 1920 when it was used in 1919? But it's a great photo
anyway. Another site visitor explained this "error";

more.) This
photo shows one of the Vimy's propellers being balanced.
The caption reads: "Balancing of almost finished
propeller in Pattern Shop." Note: Mr. McCarty, who went out of his way to have the photos reduced so he could scan and e-mail them, added: "I used to fly DH-82's Tiger Moths way back when the cost was 3 pound ($6)New Zealand per hour." |
