I am currently a flight instructor at Kansas State University at Salina.
I am Double Majoring while I am here at college; B.S. Airway Science
Professional Pilot, and B.S.
Aviation Maintenance. I have completed the Pilot training, but am
still working on my A & P Mechanic license.
I feel very honored and privileged to have had the opportunity to fly
the Vimy. It was one of the best experiences of my life. It is a very
beautiful and majestic aircraft and sitting in the cockpit feels like
stepping back in time. The deafening roar of the engines and the feel
of the wind on my face...I wouldn't trade it for the world!!!
The Vimy does take a lot of skill and a lot more physical strength,
than I
expected, to fly. Since we took off at 5:00 AM to beat thunderstorms
and rain out of the Salina area I had to learn to fly the Vimy in the
Dark. I flew 99% outside visual reference (aiming for lights I picked
out on the horizon) but did catch a peak at the instruments when the
flashes of lightning illuminated the cockpit.
The last half of the flight was just a little bumpy and by the time
we got to Oshkosh my
arms and legs were tired and aching from wrestling with the yoke and
keeping up with the rudder.
I am really happy I could help out with the project, and truly respect
Mark and Steve for the endeavor they have taken on.
Good Luck on the rest of the journey.
